Digital points cards for customer spending
BMO Pass points cards give businesses a way to recognise spending through a card customers keep in their phone. Instead of treating every visit as equal, a points programme can connect reward progress to the amount a customer spends.
Choose points when basket sizes vary
A customer buying one item and a customer making a larger purchase may contribute different amounts to your business. Points let your reward rules reflect that difference. This can suit retail shops and services with a broad range of purchase values.
Start with the relationship between eligible spend, points earned and the reward available. Show the rule in plain language before customers join. Exclusions, minimum spend and redemption conditions should be easy to find rather than left for staff to explain after a purchase.
Record activity through the staff portal
Customers open a joining link or scan a QR code, then save a supported card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Staff use the portal on a phone or tablet to find the card and record eligible activity. The customer can keep their card available without installing a separate customer app.
Decide who on your team can record purchases and handle rewards. A consistent counter routine matters more than a complicated set of offers. Confirm your spending and redemption workflow during setup rather than assuming that your existing point-of-sale system is automatically connected.
Keep the value understandable
A larger points number is not necessarily a better reward. Customers need to understand what that number can be used for. Check the cost to your business as well as the appeal of the offer, and use the same explanation on the card and at the counter.
If every eligible visit should earn the same progress, use a stamp card instead. If customers are paying in advance for a fixed number of sessions, use a class pass. Keeping these purposes separate avoids a programme that tries to do several conflicting jobs.
Questions to settle before launch
Decide whether points follow the full purchase amount or only eligible items. Explain how discounts, refunds and reward redemptions affect the programme. These are your business rules, so confirm that the chosen setup supports them before advertising the offer.
Staff should be able to explain a sample purchase and the resulting reward progress without a calculator. If customers cannot tell whether the reward is valuable, changing the card artwork will not fix the underlying rule. Make the earning and redemption explanation visible together.
